Amazon Deforestation Slows

By MERY GALANTERNICK
The government announced a 50 percent decline in the deforestation rate in the Amazon rainforest. From August 2004 to last month, slightly more than 3,515 square miles of Amazon forest disappeared, compared with 7,229 square miles from August 2003 to July 2004.

The Amazon accounts for nearly 60 percent of Brazil's territory. Officials attributed the drop to government action, while environmentalists treated the figures with caution.
